The committee has issued recommendations on four books as of this week: “Beloved” by Toni Morrison “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safran Foer and “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini.Ī total of 700 complaint forms have been filed on the books, according to information in the book review committee recommendations. The committee was founded as a result of complaints filed by parents and district residents about books in District 6 schools. “The Kite Runner” was available at Northridge, Greeley Central and Greeley West high schools as of the review dated May 22.īoth reviews were written by retired District 6 assistant superintendent Wes Tuttle, who has led or facilitated the committee since its inception earlier this year. “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” was located in libraries at Northridge and Greeley Central high schools and at Brentwood Middle School as of early May. The 23-person book review committee evaluating both “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” and “The Kite Runner” in May found the books should continue to remain openly available to students in schools where the books were located at the time of the review. Two challenged books were recommended for Greeley-Evans School District students last month as part of the ongoing process to evaluate literature some district residents find unsuitable for public schools and students.
